Choosing the right hypnotherapist for you (Part 2)

Last week, we explored some tips to help you on your journey to choosing a hypnotherapist. Keeping these things in mind when searching for a professional can be helpful, but what happens when you’ve reached the point of contacting a hypnotherapist?

You have someone in mind that you think could help, but your research shouldn’t stop there. When getting in contact to set up an initial session or telephone consultation, there’s plenty of things that you can check, to confirm that this is the right practitioner for you.

So, below we explore some important questions you could ask to help you identify the right hypnotherapist for you.

1. Have you had recognised training? And are you insured?

Currently, in the UK, there are no laws that stipulate the level of training required in order for an individual to practice as a hypnotherapist. So, it is important to do your research. Check that the professional you are reaching out to has undergone a course or training programme within the area you require treatment for.

Here at Hypnotherapy Directory, we understand the value of knowing your hypnotherapist is trained and experienced – which is why we have a thorough approvals policy in place that must be met by each professional before we list their hypnotherapy service. By searching for a hypnotherapist on our website, you can be assured that the professional has a relevant qualification and insurance, or is a member of a recognised hypnotherapy professional body.

2. What experience do you have of treating my condition?

Last week, we explored the benefit of specialisms. Whilst this can be a good way to refine your search, there won’t necessarily be a hypnotherapist who specialises and fulfils all of your other requirements: such as, location, availability, or at the price you are looking for.

If this is so, it is still worth reaching out to other professionals. By asking what experience they have in treating conditions like yours, you might find that they have a wealth of experience – that you couldn’t find from a quick search on their website.

3. Do you offer support between sessions? If so what kind?

There is more to hypnotherapy than what happens during the treatment itself. Ongoing practise and work at home, such as self-hypnosis techniques, can be a vital factor in the speed and effectiveness of your treatment.

Don’t be deterred if your hypnotherapist highlights that you will need to do work on your own after sessions. The more work that is required from you, is sometimes for the better. You will learn and develop techniques that you can practice on your own, long after your sessions are over.

4. Do I sound like the type of client you can help?

The connection between you and your hypnotherapist needs to be right; this is a two-way relationship after all. If this professional believes that they can guide you through this journey, they will be able to reassure you about the process you are about to undertake.

Equally, if they don’t think they can help you, ask them why. This will be helpful as your search continues for another professional.

Remain positive throughout the process of your search – maintaining a positive mental outlook will be a powerful tool in helping you to reach your end goal.
